Miss Eden's Letters

by Emily Eden

About 9 h 13 min of reading16 chapters

Emily Eden, the author of The Semi-Detached House and Up the Country, was a sharp and funny letter writer who moved in the highest circles of Whig society. This selection, edited by her great-niece Violet Dickinson and published in 1919, runs from 1814 to 1863. It follows her through London seasons and country-house visits, political crises and family events, and the years she spent in India as hostess for her brother Lord Auckland, Governor-General from 1836. Eden writes with lively irony about ministers, marriages, illnesses and travel, and the letters give an intimate view of English political and social life from the Regency to the middle of Victoria's reign. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
