Complete Prose Works
Specimen Days and Collect, November Boughs and Goodbye My Fancy
Walt Whitman gathered his prose into this volume in 1892, the last year of his life. Specimen Days is the nearest thing he wrote to an autobiography: family history on Long Island, Brooklyn ferries and Broadway omnibuses, and above all the notes he kept while nursing wounded soldiers in the Washington hospitals of the Civil War. Collect contains Democratic Vistas, the prefaces to Leaves of Grass and his lecture on the death of Lincoln. November Boughs and Good-Bye My Fancy add late essays on Shakespeare, Burns, Tennyson, American slang and his own poetry. The prose is looser and more conversational than the verse, and the war notes in particular are among the most direct things written about that conflict. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first section free.
