Leaves of Grass
Leaves of Grass is the book Walt Whitman spent his life writing. He printed the first edition himself in 1855, twelve untitled poems in a thin quarto, and went on revising, rearranging and adding until the so-called deathbed edition of 1891 and 1892, which is the text given here. It contains Song of Myself, the Calamus and Children of Adam sequences, the Civil War poems of Drum-Taps, When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd, Crossing Brooklyn Ferry and hundreds of shorter pieces. Whitman wrote in long unrhymed lines, took the whole of American life as his subject and spoke in the first person for everyone. Almost all later American poetry has had to reckon with him. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first poems are free.
