The Love Letters of Mary Wollstonecraft to Gilbert Imlay
Mary Wollstonecraft, author of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, met the American adventurer Gilbert Imlay in Paris in 1793, during the Terror, and bore his daughter Fanny the following year. These letters, written between 1793 and 1795 in Paris, Le Havre, London and Scandinavia, where she traveled on his business, follow the affair from confidence through anxiety to abandonment and two attempts on her own life. They were published after her death by William Godwin, who thought them the equal of Werther, and this edition reprints them with a biographical preface. They show the most formidable woman intellectual of her age pleading, reasoning and raging with a man who had lost interest, and they are as painful to read as any letters in English.
