Maria; Or, The Wrongs of Woman
Maria; Or, The Wrongs of Woman is the unfinished novel Mary Wollstonecraft was working on when she died in 1797; her husband William Godwin published the fragment the following year. Maria has been confined to a private madhouse by a husband who wants control of her fortune and has taken her infant daughter from her. In the asylum she is drawn to a fellow prisoner, Henry Darnford, and to Jemima, the attendant whose own story of poverty and abuse is one of the book's central episodes. Through the memoir Maria writes for her daughter, Wollstonecraft turns the arguments of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman into fiction. Godwin's edition preserves her notes toward several possible endings. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
