A Vindication of the Rights of Woman

by Mary Wollstonecraft

With Strictures on Political and Moral Subjects

About 5 h 39 min of reading15 chapters

A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, published in 1792 in the middle of the debate over the French Revolution, is Mary Wollstonecraft's argument that women are rational creatures whose apparent weakness is the product of their education. Writing fast and with anger, she attacks Rousseau's Sophie and the conduct books that trained girls to please, argues that virtue has no sex and that a wife kept ignorant cannot be a good mother or companion, and calls for national coeducational day schools and for women to be allowed to earn their living in medicine, business and politics. Widely read, then buried for a century under the scandal of her life, it has been a founding text of feminism since its recovery. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
