The Love Letters of Henry VIII to Anne Boleyn; With Notes
Between about 1527 and 1528, while he was trying to rid himself of Catherine of Aragon and before Anne Boleyn had agreed to be his, Henry VIII wrote her a series of letters, some in French and some in English, which found their way to the Vatican Library, where they still are. He complains that she will not answer, sends her a buck he has killed, reports on the sweating sickness that has broken out near her, and draws her initials inside a heart. Anne's replies have not survived. This small edition gathers ten of the letters in English with notes on their circumstances. They are the only private love letters of an English king to have come down to us. Read it online in your browser on Vinteuil; the opening pages are free.
