The Diary of Samuel Pepys — Complete
From January 1660 to May 1669, Samuel Pepys, a rising naval administrator in his late twenties and thirties, kept a shorthand diary of everything: the return of Charles II, the coronation, the plague year of 1665 when he stayed in London, the Great Fire of 1666 which he watched from a boat and reported to the King, the Dutch fleet in the Medway, plays, sermons, music, the price of a wig, quarrels with his wife and his own persistent infidelities. He stopped only because he feared for his eyesight. The diary was decoded in the nineteenth century and remains the fullest record of daily life in Restoration London. This complete edition follows Mynors Bright's transcription, with Henry B. Wheatley's notes. Read it online in your browser on Vinteuil; the opening pages are free.
