The Journal of Sir Walter Scott
From the Original Manuscript at Abbotsford
The Journal of Sir Walter Scott was kept from 1825 to 1832 and first published in full from the manuscript at Abbotsford in 1890. Scott began it at the height of his fame and within weeks was recording the collapse of his publishers, which left him with enormous debts he resolved to pay off by writing. The entries follow the death of his wife, the sale of his Edinburgh house, the composition of Woodstock, the Life of Napoleon and the later novels at a punishing rate, his strokes, his failing memory and a last voyage to Italy. Alongside this he records dinners, gossip, politics, his reading and the weather with unfailing good humor, in one of the most moving diaries in English. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
