The Pirate, published in 1822, is Walter Scott's novel of Shetland and Orkney at the end of the seventeenth century. Mordaunt Mertoun, son of a gloomy recluse, is a favorite of the household of Magnus Troil and his daughters Minna and Brenda until he rescues a shipwrecked stranger, Cleveland, who turns out to be a pirate and who displaces him in the family's affections. Minna's romantic attachment to the outlaw, the prophetess Norna of the Fitful Head and the arrival of Cleveland's crew at Kirkwall drive the second half. Scott drew on a voyage he made with the lighthouse commissioners in 1814, and the book is full of the islands' weather, customs and Norse survivals. This is the Andrew Lang edition, with his introduction. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
