Waverley; or, 'Tis sixty years since
Waverley, published anonymously in 1814, was Walter Scott's first novel and the beginning of the historical novel as the nineteenth century understood it. Edward Waverley, a dreamy young English officer, goes north in 1745 to visit his uncle's old Jacobite friend the Baron of Bradwardine, is drawn into the Highlands by the chieftain Fergus Mac-Ivor and his sister Flora, and finds himself, half by accident, in the army of Prince Charles Edward at Prestonpans. The book sets the romance of the clans against the prose of modern Britain, and its humor and its scenery made Scotland a literary country. This text follows the Border Edition of 1893, edited by Andrew Lang, with Scott's prefaces, notes and glossary. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
