The Lady of the Lake

by Walter Scott

About 5 h 14 min of reading19 chapters

A narrative poem in six cantos set around Loch Katrine in the Scottish Highlands during the reign of James V. A huntsman who calls himself James Fitz-James loses his way and is sheltered on an island by Ellen Douglas, daughter of an outlawed nobleman. Ellen is loved by the fierce Highland chieftain Roderick Dhu and by the young Malcolm Graeme, and the arrival of the stranger sets the clans and the crown on a path to confrontation. Published in 1810, the poem was an immediate success and sent tourists to the Trossachs in such numbers that the region's economy changed. It contains the "Boat Song" that became "Hail to the Chief" and a long single combat that Scott's readers knew by heart. Read it online in your browser on Vinteuil; the first canto is free.
