Marmion, published in 1808, is Walter Scott's second long narrative poem, set in the weeks before the battle of Flodden in 1513. Lord Marmion, a favorite of Henry VIII, rides north as envoy to the Scottish court; behind him lie a forged accusation that ruined his rival De Wilton and a discarded mistress, Constance de Beverley, who is tried and walled up alive by her convent. The six cantos move from Norham Castle to Lindisfarne, a Border inn, the Scottish camp, Holyrood and the battlefield, where Marmion's guilt and courage meet. Each canto opens with a verse epistle to a friend. This Cassell's National Library edition of 1888 has an introduction by Henry Morley.
