Ivanhoe
A Romance
Ivanhoe, published in 1819, was Walter Scott's first novel set in England rather than Scotland, and it fixed the popular image of the Middle Ages for a century. In the reign of Richard the Lionheart, the disinherited Saxon knight Wilfred of Ivanhoe returns from the Crusades to a country divided between Saxon and Norman and misgoverned by Prince John. The story moves from the tournament at Ashby through the siege of Torquilstone castle to the trial of the Jewish healer Rebecca for witchcraft, with Robin Hood, Friar Tuck, and the Black Knight along the way. Rebecca and her father Isaac are among Scott's most sympathetic creations, and the book's romance has never lost its appeal. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
