Life and Letters of Charles Darwin — Volume 1
The Life and Letters of Charles Darwin was edited by his son Francis and published in 1887, five years after Darwin's death. This first volume contains the autobiographical sketch Darwin wrote for his children, with its candid account of his schooling, his religious views and the loss of his taste for poetry, followed by Francis Darwin's reminiscences of his father's daily routine. The letters then trace Cambridge, the appointment to the Beagle, the voyage, the London years, the move to Down and the long gestation of the theory of natural selection, from the notebooks of the 1830s through Wallace's paper in 1858 to the writing of the Origin. A closing chapter by T. H. Huxley describes the book's reception. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
