The Voyage of the Beagle is the name given to Charles Darwin's journal of the five-year surveying voyage, from 1831 to 1836, on which he served as naturalist, first published in 1839 and revised in 1845. It follows the ship from Plymouth to the Cape Verde Islands and Brazil, along the coasts of Argentina and Patagonia, through Tierra del Fuego and the Strait of Magellan, to Chile, Peru, the Galapagos Islands, Tahiti, New Zealand, Australia and home by way of Mauritius and the Cape. Darwin describes gauchos and slaves, earthquakes, fossils of giant mammals, coral reefs and the tortoises and finches of the Galapagos, and the reader watches the observations gather that would become the theory of evolution. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
