About 7 h 18 min of reading17 chapters

The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals, published in 1872, was planned as a chapter of The Descent of Man and grew into a book. Charles Darwin asks why people and animals show feeling as they do, why a dog bares its teeth, why we shrug, blush, weep or raise our eyebrows in surprise, and he answers with three principles: habits once useful that have become reflex, antithesis to such habits, and the direct overflow of nervous energy. He draws on his children, asylum patients, correspondents across the empire and photographs by Duchenne and Rejlander, among the first used in a scientific book. The argument that expression is inherited and continuous across species was an extension of his theory.
