The Descent of Man, published in two volumes in 1871, is the book in which Charles Darwin applied the argument of the Origin of Species to human beings. This first volume contains all of Part I: the evidence that man is descended from some lower form, drawn from anatomy, embryology and rudimentary organs; the comparison of the mental and moral powers of man and the animals, including the origin of the moral sense; the manner of man's development and his genealogy; and the races of man. It then opens Part II, on sexual selection, setting out the principles and laws of inheritance and beginning the survey of secondary sexual characters with the lower animals and the insects. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
