The Variation of Animals and Plants Under Domestication, Vol. I.
The Variation of Animals and Plants under Domestication, published in 1868, is the book in which Charles Darwin laid out in detail the evidence about variation and selection that the Origin of Species had only summarized. This first volume works through the domesticated animals: dogs and cats, horses and asses, pigs, cattle, sheep and goats, rabbits, and then, in two long chapters, the pigeons that Darwin had bred himself, with their pouters, carriers, fantails, tumblers and jacobins, whose descent from the rock pigeon he argues in detail. Fowls, ducks, geese, peacocks, turkeys, canaries, goldfish, bees and silk moths follow, and the volume closes with cultivated plants, from cereals and vegetables to fruit trees and flowers. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
