The Autobiography of Charles Darwin

by Charles Darwin

About 1 h 31 min of reading7 chapters

Charles Darwin wrote these recollections in 1876, at sixty-seven, for his children and grandchildren, adding a few pages in 1881; his son Francis published them after his death. In plain, unguarded prose he describes himself as an indifferent schoolboy who collected everything, recalls his abandoned medical studies at Edinburgh and his years at Cambridge, then the voyage of the Beagle, his marriage, the move to Down and the long work that led to On the Origin of Species. He reviews each of his publications in turn and is frank about his religious doubts, his poor health and the loss, in later life, of his taste for poetry and music.
