About 14 h 50 min of reading74 chapters

The Variation of Animals and Plants Under Domestication, published in 1868, was the first of the larger works Charles Darwin had promised as support for the argument of On the Origin of Species. This second volume turns from the catalogue of domestic breeds in the first to general principles. Darwin examines inheritance and its failures, reversion to ancestral characters, the effects of crossing and of close interbreeding, the influence of domestication on fertility, selection by man both deliberate and unconscious, the causes and laws of variability, and correlated variation. He closes with his provisional hypothesis of pangenesis, an attempt to explain heredity through particles shed by every part of the body.
