The Foundations of the Origin of Species

by Charles Darwin

Two Essays written in 1842 and 1844

About 6 h 04 min of reading82 chapters

Long before he published On the Origin of Species in 1859, Charles Darwin wrote out his theory of evolution by natural selection twice: in a short sketch of 1842 and in a much fuller essay of 1844. Neither was published in his lifetime. His son Francis Darwin edited both texts for this volume, issued by Cambridge University Press in 1909 for the centenary of his father's birth. The essays move from variation under domestication to variation in nature, the evidence of geology, geographical distribution and classification. Reading them shows the argument of the Origin taking shape fifteen years before it appeared. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
