A Monograph on the Sub-class Cirripedia (Volume 2 of 2)
The Balanidæ, (or Sessile Cirripedes); the Verrucidæ, etc., etc.
Charles Darwin spent eight years on barnacles before he published On the Origin of Species, and this monograph, issued by the Ray Society, was the result. This second volume, published in 1854 and dedicated to the French zoologist Henri Milne-Edwards, deals with the Balanidae, or sessile barnacles, and the Verrucidae. Darwin describes the structure of the shell, its compartments and valves, growth and anatomy in great detail, then gives the genera and species one by one with their distribution. The work is technical, written for specialists, but it shows the patient comparison of variation within species that shaped his later thinking, and it remains a foundation of barnacle classification.
