More Letters of Charles Darwin — Volume 1
A Record of His Work in a Series of Hitherto Unpublished Letters
More Letters of Charles Darwin, published in 1903, was edited by Francis Darwin and A. C. Seward from the correspondence left out of the Life and Letters sixteen years earlier. This first volume opens with an outline of Darwin's life and an autobiographical fragment, then prints the letters in groups by subject rather than strictly by date: early letters from Edinburgh and the Beagle, the development of the theory of evolution between 1844 and 1858, the writing and defense of the Origin of Species, and exchanges on geology and on the geographical distribution of plants and animals. Darwin's chief correspondents are Joseph Hooker, Charles Lyell, Asa Gray, Huxley and Wallace. The editors supply notes identifying people and the scientific questions at issue. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
