The letters of Queen Victoria, vol. 1, 1837-1843
The Letters of Queen Victoria were published in three volumes in 1907 by command of Edward VII, edited by Arthur Christopher Benson and Viscount Esher from the hundreds of bound volumes the Queen had kept since girlhood. This first volume opens with letters written as a princess in 1836 and then covers the years 1837 to 1843: her accession at eighteen, her dependence on Lord Melbourne, the Bedchamber crisis, her marriage to Prince Albert in 1840, the births of her first children, the fall of the Whigs and her adjustment to Sir Robert Peel. The editors introduce each year with a summary of events. The letters, many to her uncle Leopold of Belgium, are direct and opinionated. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
