The letters of Queen Victoria, vol. 2, 1844-1853
This second volume of the selection from Queen Victoria's correspondence, edited by Arthur Christopher Benson and Viscount Esher and published in 1907, covers the years 1844 to 1853. Each year opens with an introductory note, followed by letters from and to the Queen. She writes to her uncle King Leopold of the Belgians and to her ministers, among them Sir Robert Peel, Lord John Russell and Lord Palmerston, whose independent foreign policy she and Prince Albert deeply resented. The letters follow the repeal of the Corn Laws, the revolutions of 1848, the Great Exhibition of 1851 and the approach of the Crimean War, alongside family life and royal visits. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
