About 4 h 36 min of reading29 chapters

Emily Brontë, published in 1883 in the Eminent Women series, was the first full-length biography of the author of Wuthering Heights, written by the poet A. Mary F. Robinson. Working from Mrs. Gaskell's life of Charlotte, Ellen Nussey's recollections and conversations with people who had known the family, Robinson follows Emily from the parsonage and Cowan Bridge school through her brief time in Brussels, the collapse of her brother Branwell, the poems, the writing and reception of her one novel and her death at thirty in 1848. Two chapters are given to Wuthering Heights, its origin and its story. The book is sympathetic and sometimes speculative, and it fixed the image of Emily as the solitary genius of the moors. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
