From Chaucer to Tennyson

by Henry A. Beers

With Twenty-Nine Portraits and Selections from Thirty Authors

About 6 h 36 min of reading116 chapters

Henry A. Beers, a professor of English at Yale, wrote this compact history of English literature in 1890 for the Chautauqua reading circles, which brought college-level study to adults across the United States. Eight chapters carry the story from the Norman Conquest to the death of Scott and on to the present, concentrating on belles lettres and deliberately leaving out Anglo-Saxon and the Scots vernacular before Burns. The second half is an anthology: selections from thirty authors, from the Prioress and the Nun's Priest's Tale to Tennyson, with twenty-nine portraits and a short reading course after each chapter. It is a period piece, but a clear and well-made one. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
