Henry Augustin Beers (1847–1926) was an American scholar and writer who taught English at Yale for more than forty years, from 1871 until his retirement in 1916, and was among the first to make English literature a university subject in the United States. His History of English Romanticism in the Eighteenth Century and its companion volume on the nineteenth were standard works for a generation, and From Chaucer to Tennyson, written for the Chautauqua reading circles in 1890, carried a compact literary history and anthology to thousands of adult readers. He also published poems, essays, a biography of Nathaniel Parker Willis and a volume of stories.
