John Colin Dunlop, the Scottish author of The History of Fiction, also wrote a History of Roman Literature from its Earliest Period to the Augustan Age, which appeared in London in the 1820s; this second volume comes from the Philadelphia edition of 1827. It is devoted to the rise of Latin prose: the early historians and annalists such as Fabius Pictor, the encyclopedic scholars Cato the Elder, Varro and Nigidius Figulus, Sallust and Julius Caesar, and finally Cicero, whose orations, treatises and letters receive the longest treatment. An appendix and a chronological table complete the volume. Dunlop combines biography, summary and judgment in a readable style. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
