John Colin Dunlop

John Colin Dunlop (1785–1842) was a Scottish lawyer and literary historian. Born in Glasgow and educated at its university, he became an advocate and later sheriff of Renfrewshire. His History of Fiction, published in 1814, was the first comprehensive history of prose fiction in English, tracing romances and novels from the Greeks through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. He followed it with a History of Roman Literature from its Earliest Period to the Augustan Age and Memoirs of Spain during the reigns of Philip IV and Charles II, and translated poems from Latin, Italian and Spanish.
