Harriet Martineau
Harriet Martineau is a life of the English writer and reformer by the journalist Florence Fenwick Miller, published in 1884 in the Eminent Women series. Martineau, deaf from youth and raised among Norwich Unitarians, became famous with her Illustrations of Political Economy, toured the United States and attacked slavery, wrote the novel Deerbrook, translated Auguste Comte and spent her later decades as a leader writer for the Daily News from a house she built in the Lake District. Fenwick Miller, herself a campaigner for women's rights, writes with sympathy and some impatience, and the book is both a portrait and an argument about what a woman of intellect could do in the nineteenth century.
