The Works of the Emperor Julian, Vol. 1
Julian, nephew of Constantine, ruled the Roman Empire for less than two years before his death on campaign in Persia in 363, and is remembered for his attempt to restore the old gods against the Christianity of his family. This first volume of Wilmer Cave Wright's translation, published in 1913, contains his five orations: two panegyrics on his cousin and rival the emperor Constantius, written while Julian was a subordinate Caesar in Gaul; a panegyric on the empress Eusebia, who had protected him; the hymn to King Helios, the fullest statement of his sun-centered Neoplatonic theology; and the hymn to the Mother of the Gods. Wright's introduction recounts his life, and each oration has its own preface. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
