The works of John Dryden, now first collected in eighteen volumes. Volume 09
This ninth volume of the eighteen-volume Works of John Dryden, originally edited by Sir Walter Scott in 1808 and revised by George Saintsbury in the 1880s, contains the historical and political poems. It begins with the Heroic Stanzas on the death of Cromwell and turns, within two years, to Astraea Redux and the Panegyric on the restored king's coronation; then come the Satire on the Dutch, the verses to the Duchess of York and Annus Mirabilis, Dryden's poem on the wonders of 1666, the Dutch war and the Fire of London. The volume ends with his political masterpieces of the Exclusion Crisis, Absalom and Achitophel in both parts and The Medal, each accompanied by Scott's historical notes on the persons satirized.
