The Wind in the Willows
The Wind in the Willows, published in 1908, grew out of bedtime stories Kenneth Grahame told his young son. Mole gives up spring cleaning, discovers the river and makes friends with the Water Rat; Badger lives under the Wild Wood and dislikes company; and Toad of Toad Hall takes up and abandons caravans, motorcars and prison escapes in turn. The book shifts between comic episodes and passages of strange lyricism, among them the night on the island in The Piper at the Gates of Dawn and Rat's temptation by the Sea Rat. It is a book about friendship, home and the English river, and adults have claimed it from children for more than a century. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
