The House on the Borderland
Two friends on a fishing holiday in the west of Ireland find a ruined house above a great pit, and in the rubble a water-stained manuscript. It was written by the recluse who lived there with his sister and his dog, and it records two kinds of horror. The first is physical: pale, swine-like creatures that climb out of the pit at night and lay siege to the house. The second is cosmic: visions in which the narrator is carried out of time to watch the sun age and the solar system die. Published in 1908, the novel was admired by H. P. Lovecraft, and its mixture of haunted-house dread and astronomical scale was new. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
