The Night Land
The Night Land, published in 1912, is William Hope Hodgson's vast vision of the end of the world. A seventeenth-century gentleman, grieving for his dead wife Mirdath, dreams himself millions of years into the future, when the sun has gone out and the last of humanity lives in the Last Redoubt, a great metal pyramid besieged by monstrous Watchers and stranger powers in the darkness. Through the mind-speech of the age he hears a call from a lost second refuge and sets out alone across the Night Land to find the woman who may be his love reborn. Written in a deliberately archaic style, it is one of the founding works of cosmic horror. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
