The Works of Edgar Allan Poe — Volume 1

by Edgar Allan Poe

About 6 h 02 min of reading15 chapters

This first of two volumes gathers eight of Poe's tales together with three contemporary essays on his life and death, by James Russell Lowell and Nathaniel Parker Willis among others. The stories include The Murders in the Rue Morgue, from 1841, which introduced the detective C. Auguste Dupin and with him the detective story itself; its sequel The Mystery of Marie Rogêt, based on a real New York murder; The Gold-Bug, a treasure hunt built around a cipher; the sea story MS. Found in a Bottle; The Balloon-Hoax, originally printed as news; the moon voyage of Hans Pfaall; and The Oval Portrait. The emphasis is on Poe the inventor of puzzles and hoaxes rather than Poe the writer of horror, who dominates the second volume.
