Eureka: A Prose Poem

by Edgar Allan Poe

About 2 h 54 min of reading7 chapters

Eureka, published in 1848, the year before Edgar Allan Poe's death, is his attempt to explain the whole universe. He called it a prose poem and dedicated it to those who feel rather than to those who think. Starting from the principle that all things began in a single primordial particle, Poe argues that matter was scattered outward and is drawn back toward unity by gravitation, until the universe will collapse into its origin and perhaps begin again. Mixing physics, metaphysics, satire of contemporary philosophers and a strain of mysticism, the essay has puzzled readers since its publication, and some of its intuitions have been compared with later cosmology. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the opening pages are free.
