The Raven
The Raven is the poem that made Edgar Allan Poe famous, first printed in the New York Evening Mirror in January 1845 and reprinted across the country within weeks. On a bleak December midnight a scholar grieving for the lost Lenore hears a tapping at his chamber door and admits a raven, which perches on a bust of Pallas and answers every question with the single word Nevermore. Over eighteen stanzas of trochaic verse, with their internal rhymes and heavy refrain, the speaker's questions turn from idle to desperate, and the bird's one word becomes the voice of his own despair. Poe later described the poem's construction in The Philosophy of Composition. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the opening pages are free.
