The Cask of Amontillado
Montresor has been wronged by Fortunato, and he has decided on revenge. During the madness of carnival season he lures his drunken acquaintance into the family vaults with the promise of a rare cask of Amontillado sherry waiting to be judged. The two men descend through damp catacombs lined with bones, Fortunato coughing, Montresor solicitous and polite, until they reach a small recess at the end of the passage. Poe never explains what the original insult was, and the story is told fifty years after the event by a narrator who expects to be understood.
