The Works of Edgar Allan Poe — Volume 3
The third volume of the Raven Edition of Poe's works is given over mostly to his only novel, The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket, first published in 1838. Pym stows away on the brig Grampus and passes through mutiny, shipwreck, starvation and cannibalism before a rescue carries him toward the Antarctic and a white expanse that closes the book in mid-sentence. The volume then adds six tales: Ligeia and Morella, two stories of a dead wife's will surviving death; A Tale of the Ragged Mountains, on mesmerism and a vision of Benares; The Spectacles, a comedy of short sight; King Pest, a grotesque set in plague-struck London; and Three Sundays in a Week. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
