Carthoris, son of John Carter and Dejah Thoris, loves Thuvia, princess of Ptarth, but she is promised to another and Barsoomian honor forbids him to speak. When Thuvia is abducted and the crime is made to look like his, war threatens between the great cities of Mars, and Carthoris sets out across the dead sea bottoms to find her. The search brings them to Lothar, a city of philosophers who have learned to fight with armies of imaginary bowmen, and into the hands of the green warriors of Torquas. This fourth Barsoom novel, serialized in 1916 and published as a book in 1920, is the first in which John Carter steps aside for the next generation.
