About 4 h 29 min of reading29 chapters

A Princess of Mars, serialized in 1912 and published as a book in 1917, is the first of Edgar Rice Burroughs's Barsoom novels. John Carter, a Confederate veteran prospecting in Arizona, hides from Apaches in a cave and finds himself transported to Mars, where the lower gravity gives him enormous strength. He is captured by the green, four-armed warriors of Thark, befriends their chieftain Tars Tarkas, and falls in love with Dejah Thoris, a captive princess of the red Martian city of Helium. The book invented a whole planet of dying seas, airships, radium rifles and warring races, and its mixture of swordplay, romance and alien politics shaped a century of science fiction and fantasy that followed. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
