The Chessmen of Mars
The Chessmen of Mars, published in 1922, is the fifth of Edgar Rice Burroughs's Barsoom novels and one of the most inventive. Tara of Helium, the daughter of John Carter and Dejah Thoris, is carried off by a storm in her flier and comes down in Bantoom, where the kaldanes, bodiless heads of pure intellect, ride headless bodies called rykors. Gahan of Gathol, the suitor she had snubbed, follows her, and both end up in the ancient city of Manator, where disputes are settled by jetan, a form of chess played with living pieces who fight to the death. Burroughs supplied the rules of jetan in an appendix, and readers have played it since. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
