The Gods of Mars is the second of Edgar Rice Burroughs's Barsoom novels, serialized in 1913. Ten years after being torn from Mars at the end of A Princess of Mars, John Carter returns and lands in the Valley Dor, the supposed paradise where Martians go to die. He finds instead a trap run by the white-skinned Therns and, beneath them, by the black First Born and their self-proclaimed goddess Issus. Reunited with Tars Tarkas, Carter fights his way through both priesthoods in search of Dejah Thoris. The book moves at a run and ends on a cliffhanger that Burroughs resolved in The Warlord of Mars; its attack on religious fraud is as blunt as its sword fights. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
