The Return of Tarzan
The Return of Tarzan, first published in a magazine in 1913, picks up where Tarzan of the Apes left off. Having given up Jane Porter, Tarzan sails for France, where his strength and innocence of civilized manners entangle him with the Countess Olga de Coude and with two Russian schemers, Rokoff and Paulvitch, who mean to ruin him. A posting as a government agent takes him to Algeria and into desert fights, and a voyage south ends in his return to the jungle, where he becomes chief of the Waziri and finds the ruined city of Opar and its priestess La. Edgar Rice Burroughs keeps the action moving from chapter to chapter. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
