The Green Mouse, published in 1910, is a comic fantasy set among the rich of New York. A ruined young man named Destyn invents a machine that intercepts the "psychic waves" of people destined to marry each other, and with a backer founds the Green Mouse, Limited, to put the discovery to commercial use. The experiment is tried on the five daughters of the irascible Bushwyck Carr, whose names run from Sacharissa to Flavilla, and each chapter pairs one of them off in circumstances that range from a cross-town streetcar to a visiting crown prince. Robert W. Chambers, better remembered now for his horror stories, writes here in a light, teasing register, poking fun at science, society and the courtship novel itself. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
