The King in Yellow
The King in Yellow is a collection of ten stories, the first four of which share a device: a banned play, also called The King in Yellow, whose second act drives anyone who reads it to madness. The Repairer of Reputations is set in a hallucinatory New York of 1920; The Mask, In the Court of the Dragon and The Yellow Sign follow artists in Paris and New York who come too close to the play. The remaining stories drop the supernatural and portray American art students in the Latin Quarter, where Chambers himself had studied painting. Published in 1895, the book was admired by H. P. Lovecraft, who borrowed some of its names, and it has been rediscovered more than once since. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
