Undine

by Friedrich de La Motte-Fouqué

About 2 h 13 min of reading12 chapters

Undine is a water spirit who has been raised by an old fisherman and his wife on a spit of land between a forest and a lake. A knight, Huldbrand, takes refuge in their cottage during a storm and marries the strange, laughing girl, which gives her what spirits lack, a human soul. She follows him to his castle and to the imperial city, where his former attachment to the proud Bertalda revives, and Undine's uncle Kühleborn, a river that takes human shape, watches over her honor. First published in 1811, the tale is the best-known work of German Romantic fantasy; it has been turned into operas and ballets and lies behind many later stories of water nymphs. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
